HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHIMNEY BE CLEANED?

The simple answer is: The National Fire Protection Association Standard 211 says, “Chimneys, fireplaces and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary. This is the National Safety Standard and is the correct way to approach the problem.”

CHIMNEY CLEANING

When talking about having your chimney cleaned there are two main categories of service. The first and more commonly known type of cleaning is the fireplace sweep. This is a self explanatory line of service in which two technicians simultaneously brush down and vacuum out all the creosote from inside the fireplace flue. There is no exact time frame for how often a fireplace should be swept, as it is more dependant on how frequently it is used.

The less thought of yet more important chimney is the chimney for the heating system. This is the chimney that vents all the fumes ie. carbon monoxide from the furnace and out from the home. It is for this reason that it is extremely important to have your chimney cleaned and/or inspected by a licensed professional at least once a year.

CHIMNEY Lining

A modern day chimney liner is a stainless steel pipe, either rigid or flexible, that is most commonly used for exhausting all fumes and combustibles from the home heating system. It can also be used for fireplace, woodstove, and water heater exhaust. In most cases a new relining kit will be installed in a chimney where the original clay (terracotta) flue/lining has cracked or broken.

  • All kits come with a new stainless steel top pate and cap
  • All kits, plates, and caps come with a lifetime warranty which is transferrable to each subsequent homeowner
  • Standard home kits are made of 316 T.I. Alloy Stainless Steel
  • Industrial/Commercial grade Superflex liners also available

CHIMNEY CAPS

A Chimney cap serves many purposes. First and foremost it will prevent branches, twigs, and leaves along with other debris from falling into and blocking up the chimney. It will also prevent animals from entering your home, offer protection of the interior lining by keeping the moisture out, and protect the roof from burning embers starting a house fire. Most caps are either stainless steel or copper and come with a lifetime warranty.

CHIMNEY DAMPERS

A traditional fireplace damper, usually located in the throat of a masonry chimney just above the firebox, is a device that is meant to seal your fireplace shut when it is not in use. This is necessary so that heated air from your home will not escape up the chimney when the fireplace is not being used.

However modern day dampers known as lock-top dampers sit at the very top of the chimney in place of a cap and offer an airtight seal that will open and close using a handle located at the bottom of the fireplace on the wall of the firebox.

PREFABRICATION INSTALLATION

Similar to a chimney liner, a prefabricated chimney is a modern day exhaust system used to vent all combustion fumes from the home. The difference being that prefabricated structures are self supported and exist on the exterior of the home as opposed to the inside of an old existing chimney.

  • Units include as part of the set a new stainless steel rain shield/animal guard
  • Units are all covered by a lifetime warranty and are maintenanced annually to keep in prime working order.
  • Triple wall Metalbestos kits are self insulated allowing zero clearance to surface structures creating a clean modern look.
  • Galvanized units are also available for more affordable pricing.

BLOCKAGE AND ANIMAL REMOVAL

There are many different contributors that lead to the blockage of a chimney. The three most common in no particular order are broken clay flue tiles, twigs and leaves, and lastly animal intrusion. Blockage removal techniques vary depending on circumstances, however in the case of animal removal all procedures follow strict guidelines and regulation set forth by the animal protection groups.

Along with the National Fire Protection Association supervisors at Combustible Care recommend an annual inspection to ensure that exhaust fumes are safely and efficiently leaving the home free of any potentially hazardous obstruction.
